Asheville transformed from a pioneer outpost into a resort city within a century of its founding in 1797. By the late 1800s, people flocked to this Western North Carolina destination to take in the fresh mountain air, go horseback riding, hiking, or picnicking, and enjoy the luxurious accommodations of the Grove Park Inn and the Battery Park Hotel. During this era of booming growth, one of the wealthiest and most famous Americans of his time, George Vanderbilt, constructed the palatial Biltmore Estate as a “summer home” in Asheville. It remains the largest – and among the most opulent – private residences in the United States to this day. ...read more

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin observed that the world is round so that friendship may encircle it. They bring out the best for all of us! ...read more

Fall is when the stories we’ll tell the rest of our lives arise from the joys we share with family and friends. It’s when our senses are invigorated by the crisp air and rich colors surrounding us. It’s respite from the heat of summer and peace of mind before the chill of winter. Fall is a season best lived in the moment so memories aren’t recorded but felt. ...read more

In the days after September 27, 2024, highway information signs were emblazoned with a message... Do Not Travel in Western North Carolina. That sounds ominous, but its message was not overstated. Because of the tireless work by state and federal employees, local folks, and thousands and thousands of volunteers, the mountains are OPEN – including two lanes of Interstate 40 – and we invite you to vacation... Even before we bought the Mast General Store, we were taken by the beauty of Valle Crucis. We’ve heard people describe the drive out Broadstone Road as traveling through a time portal. In the 1970s, fields in the river bottoms would be filled with tobacco, cabbage, or high with hay to feed cattle that were grazing in the summer pasture. ...read more

Thank you for your employment interest in Mast General Store. We have been a part of Western North Carolina since 1883 and carry on the traditions of an old country general store in all of our North Carolina mountain locations, which include Valle Crucis, Boone, Waynesville, Hendersonville, Asheville, Winston-Salem, as well as Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Roanoke, Virginia.
The Mast Store is different from most any other retail stores in several ways. We are extending a legacy, particularly in our Valle Crucis locations, of customer service and neighborliness that isn't typically found today. Our stores are usually located in buildings that are unique in architecture and history and have stories of their own to tell, so for that reason we also consider ourselves to be in the "entertainment business."
If you enjoy working with people as a part of a team, having fun at work, learning about new products and sharing your knowledge with others, being creative, honoring commitments and exhibiting responsibility, then we'd like to talk with you about the Mast General Store.
Each year we have a number of jobs available on a seasonal basis in all locations from May through early January. Most of these positions are front-line customer service personnel involved in meeting our guests' needs during their visit with us in the stores. Even though we prefer to promote from within for our management level openings, at times we do search outside of the company. These positions, when available, will be listed with specific requirements.
Your application will be kept for a period of 30 days. If positions open up that you would be qualified for, it will be reviewed. After this time period expires, you will need to re-apply for any positions of interest.
Mast General Store is an equal opportunity employer.
